Today, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman emeritus of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, addressed the significance of the U.S. Agency for Global Media’s (USAGM) operations in Iran during a hearing with Senior Advisor Kari Lake.

In his remarks, McCaul commended Lake for her efforts to reform USAGM, emphasizing the agency’s historical role as a voice against oppression. He referenced past successes, such as using Voice of America and the Open Technology Fund to disseminate information in China regarding COVID-19 origins.

McCaul highlighted the need for America’s presence in Iran, stressing that communication is vital to convey intentions toward Iranian citizens and their government. He cited General Vogel’s assertion that Voice of America remains crucial for American security.

Kari Lake responded by acknowledging past achievements while noting changes needed due to evolving media consumption habits. She mentioned President Trump’s executive order mandating updates to USAGM and addressed legal challenges that temporarily halted broadcasting efforts in Farsi.

Lake expressed pride in delivering timely messages to Iran, particularly during recent events. She emphasized operating at statutory minimums across various languages and acknowledged streamlined operations due to reduced staffing.

McCaul concluded by urging continued communication efforts within Iran, recognizing its importance for challenging oppressive regimes.
