Texas A&M track and field athlete Aleksandr Solovev set a new school record in the men’s pole vault, finishing second on March 13 at the NCAA Indoor Championships held at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
The event marked a strong start for Texas A&M at the national championships. Solovev cleared six bars, culminating in a program-best mark of 5.80 meters (19-0.25), which earned him eight points for the team.
Henry Zimmerman contributed to the men’s team score by placing fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 22.83 meters (74-11) during his second round, adding four points to the total. On the women’s side, Sofia Yakushina secured her third First Team All-America honor by finishing sixth in the pentathlon with 4,336 points after competing across five events.
Several Aggies advanced to finals on the track. Freshman Peter Narumbe won his section of the 800 meters with a time of 1:47.18, earning automatic qualification for Saturday’s final. Jaiya Covington and Ja’Qualon Scott both advanced in their respective 60-meter hurdles events, while Camryn Dickson moved forward in the women’s 200 meters after topping her heat with a time of 22.72 seconds.
Blake Harris began his heptathlon campaign and accumulated 3,197 points to rank thirteenth after four events on day one.
After the first day of competition, Texas A&M’s men ranked fifth overall with twelve points and women stood twenty-first with three points. The team will return to compete on Saturday for the final day of championships.
