Passed bill authored by State Rep. Trey Wharton seeks to adjust governance of the Walker County Hospital District by establishing staggered four-year terms for board members and permitting extended leasing of district property to support operational flexibility, according to the Texas Legislature website.

In the House, 57 Democrats and 85 Republicans voted in favor of the bill, with no opposition.

Meanwhile, in the Senate, 11 Democrats and 18 Republicans voted in favor, while two Republicans voted against it.

Trey Wharton introduced the bill in the Texas House on Monday, Feb. 10, during the 89th regular legislative session.

Wharton graduated from Texas Christian University in 1989 with a BA.

Wharton, a Republican, was elected to the Texas State House in 2023 to represent the state's 12th House district, replacing previous state representative Kyle Kacal.

In essence, the bill amends the Special District Local Laws Code to modify the terms of the Walker County Hospital District's board of managers, ensuring they serve staggered four-year terms with two or three managers' terms expiring in even-numbered years.
