The No. 18 Texas A&M men’s tennis team secured a 4-1 victory over the No. 24 Florida Gators on Friday night at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
Sophomore Alex Frusina clinched the match for Texas A&M by defeating Pablo Perez Ramos, ranked No. 31, in three sets: 6-2, (2)6-7, 6-2. Frusina lost a close tiebreaker in the second set but responded with a strong performance in the third.
Texas A&M, now holding a record of 10-5 overall and 3-2 in SEC play, fell behind early after losing two consecutive doubles matches to Florida (7-7, 2-3 SEC), giving the Gators an initial advantage.
In singles competition, Texas A&M won four straight matches to secure the win. Sophomore Theo Papamalamis delivered the team’s first point by beating Henry Jefferson (No. 50) on court one with scores of 6-4 and 6-2. Senior Togan Tokac dropped only two games against Kevin Edengren on court five, winning 6-2, 6-0. Junior Lathan Skrobarcek extended his undefeated record on court six this season to 4-0 by overcoming Andreas Timini with scores of 7-5 and 6-4.
With these victories, Texas A&M was one point away from clinching before Frusina sealed the result as all remaining courts went into third sets.
The Aggies will continue their road trip by facing South Carolina in Columbia on Sunday at noon.
Match results included singles wins from Papamalamis over Jefferson (6-4, 6-2), Frusina over Perez Ramos (6-2, [2]6-7, 6-2), Tokac over Edengren (6-2, 6-0), and Skrobarcek over Timini (7-5, 6-4). Doubles play saw Florida’s Jefferson/Nirundorn defeat Papamalamis/Tokac (6-4) and Timini/Edengren beat Frusina/Skrobarcek (7-6[1]), while one doubles match remained unfinished.
