The Texas A&M Women’s Golf Team secured the seventh seed in stroke play at the Pelican Golf Club and will face No. 5 Texas in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference Championship on Monday morning, according to an April 19 announcement.
This advancement is significant for Texas A&M as it highlights their performance under pressure and sets up a notable matchup with rival Texas. The team finished with a total score of 3-over 843 after three rounds, narrowly edging out Missouri by one shot to qualify for match play.
Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said, “Scoreboard is zero-zero. It is really hard getting into match play in this tournament. Just look at the teams that didn’t make it. We have to be a little cleaner tomorrow to beat a good Texas team, but I like my team’s chances. What we just went through was a first for a lot of our young ladies. The hard part isn’t over, but this will make us better.” Sophomore Vanessa Borovilos led the Aggies with a share of second place individually after shooting six-under-par for the week.
The Aggies’ lineup also included Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio, who finished tied for 25th and holds an undefeated record in SEC match play from previous championships; Natalie Yen (tied for 38th), Brynn Kort (tied for 44th), and Sky Sudberry (tied for 52nd). The competition remained close as Missouri had an opportunity to force extra holes but missed a crucial putt on No. 18.
Texas A&M will tee off against Texas starting at 7:50 a.m., with individual matches set between players from both schools throughout the morning. If victorious, they would advance to face either Oklahoma or Tennessee later that day.
