The Texas A&M women’s tennis team, ranked No. 8 nationally, secured a 7-0 win over Mississippi State on Thursday at the Mitchell Tennis Center in Bryan-College Station. This victory extends the Aggies’ home winning streak to 77 matches and marks their ninth consecutive win against the Bulldogs.
Texas A&M improved its season record to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Aggies took an early lead by winning two of three doubles matches. Violeta Martinez and Anna Perelman quickly defeated Thessy Ntondele Zinga and Emma Cohen, 6-1, on court two. Lucciana Perez and Ilinca Amariei clinched the doubles point for Texas A&M with a 6-4 win over Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz and Chiara Di Genova on court one.
In singles competition, No. 5 Perez led off with a straight-set victory against Gianna Oboniye, followed by No. 60 Amariei’s win over Kempenaers-Pocz. Martinez, ranked No. 86, sealed the match for Texas A&M with another straight-set win on court four.
Additional singles victories came from Daria Smetannikov over Carolina Troiano (6-2, 6-3), Lexington Reed over Ntondele Zinga (6-3, 6-3), and Perelman who finished off Mia Robinson (7-6(2), 6-3).
Head Coach Mark Weaver commented on his team’s performance: “Very impressive effort all across the board. Mississippi State is very a good team, and without Mia Kupres today in the lineup it felt like everyone stepped today. We just continued to play great doubles to set the tone for the match, and to not drop a set across singles is a impressive effort from the team.”
Next up for Texas A&M is a home match against Alabama at the Mitchell Tennis Center scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m.
