U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul, chairman of the bipartisan Task Force on Enhancing Security for Special Events, has written an op-ed in The Washington Times. The piece highlights efforts to ensure safety at major upcoming events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 Olympics, and America's 250th birthday celebrations.

Reflecting on past incidents like the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, McCaul emphasizes the need for vigilance against potential threats at these events. "I will never forget April 15, 2013," he writes, noting how terrorists exploit mass-spectator events to spread fear.

McCaul points out that these international gatherings offer opportunities to showcase America's leadership but also pose risks from adversaries and extremists. He stresses the importance of preparation: "We would be naive not to expect and prepare for similar threats at our upcoming events."

The task force aims to enhance coordination among various agencies and allies. McCaul notes challenges in information sharing revealed during his investigation into the Boston Marathon bombing. "These gaps should have been fixed in the aftermath of 9/11," he states.

Unmanned aircraft systems or drones are identified as a significant threat due to their accessibility and potential for weaponization. McCaul urges action to close coordination gaps and modernize security measures.

Funding secured by House Homeland Security Committee Republicans includes $625 million for FIFA World Cup preparations, $1 billion for the Olympics, and $673 million for border protection systems.

The task force recently held its first hearing titled “Lessons Learned: An examination of historic security incidents at mass gatherings,” featuring testimony from retired Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis and Louisiana State Police Col. Robert Hodges.

McCaul concludes with a warning: "Let them be warned: The United States will not be caught off guard."
